EMT Traditional Refresher Class B
The EMT-B Core requirements outlined in N.J.A.C. 8:40A were designed to meet the needs of several distinct populations:
  1. The NJ EMT-B who is seeking recertification, or
  2. The NJ EMT-B whose certification has expired and is seeking to regain certification, or
  3. The out-of-state EMT-B who is seeking NJ certification, or
  4. The NJ registered nurse, licensed physician or physician assistant seeking EMT certification.
Since we have now added NJ EMT certification to our workforce, to be respectful of the time commitment needed to accomplish BLS recertification, recognition of the education that may have already been completed, and the clinical experience of the provider, we have developed several methods by which the requirement can be met.

OPTION 1:

This more traditional program is comprised of three (3) distinct classes (EMT Transition Refresher Class A, Class B and Class C), each a minimum of eight (8) hours in length. The three (3) components can be taken separately and in any order. Each is an instructor-led class with competency verification in the form of a written and/or psychomotor examination. All three (3) classes must be successfully completed prior to the expiration date of the EMT certification. The classes are designed to review the skills, knowledge and critical thinking needed to provide optimum prehospital patient care and provide any updates to scope of practice, clinical treatment protocols related to the provision of basic life support prehospital care in NJ. Attendance and successful completion of all three (3) Classes A, B and C, fulfill the ``Core`` component of the requirements outlined in N.J.A.C. 8:40A.

This option is best suited for:
  1. EMT-Bs who have not completed the 24 Core CEUs required for recertification.
  2. The Nationally Registered EMT-Basic who needs to re-register with NREMT and transition to the new National Registry EMT.
  3. The EMT already certified and educated to the "new" scope of practice.
  4. Healthcare professionals (e.g., RN, PA, MD/DO) and out-of-state EMT-Bs challenging the EMT certification examination through reciprocity.
  5. EMT-B or EMT candidates requiring remediation or retaining after completing an EMT-B or EMT course with three unsuccessful attempts at the certification examination.
The three (3) sections are:
  • EMT Transition Refresher Class A - assessment/airway/ventilation/respiratory support
  • EMT Transition Refresher Class B - assessment and management of the medical patient
  • EMT Transition Refresher Class C - assessment and management of the trauma patient


OPTION 2:

This new program will be comprised of two (2) distinct classes (8 CEU EMT Transition and 16 CEU EMT Review). The 8 CEU EMT Transition class, just released, is a NJ-adapted course intended to update the currently practicing NJ EMT-B to the new knowledge and skills of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) described in the 2009 National EMS Education Standards published by NHTSA. It may be used by EMT-Bs who have successfully accumulated at least 16 Core CEUs to complete the 24 Core CEU requirement for recertification. NJ EMTs may assign the 8 CEUs earned from this course to either the Core or Elective category, but not both. It presents the new skills and knowledge that some providers may have been exposed to in practice and continuing education, but not officially included in the ``old`` 1994 USDOT EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum. Successful completion of this update does not automatically initiate a new EMT card, but does permit the credentialed (authorized) practitioner to immediately operate under the revised EMT scope of practice. This program also satisfies the National Registry of EMTs requirement for ``a state approved EMT-Basic to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) transition course.``

*The 16 CEU EMT Refresher Review class is designed to review the skills, knowledge and critical thinking needed to provide optimum prehospital care. It provides a review of skills and knowledge common to both 1994 USDOT EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum and Emergency medical Technician (EMT) described in the 2009 National EMS Education Standards published by NHTSA. *NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND IS EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE SHORTLY!

Both classes must be successfully completed prior to the expiration date of the EMT certification. The classes are designed to review the skills, knowledge and critical thinking needed to provide optimum prehospital patient care and provide any updates to scope of practice, clinical treatment protocols related to the provision of basic life support prehospital care in NJ. Attendance and successful completion of all both Classes D and E, fulfill the ``Core`` component of the requirements outlined in N.J.A.C. 8:40A

This option is best suited for:
  1. EMT-Bs in agencies who desire to transition their workforce to the new EMT skills and scope of practice prior to completion of an entire refresher or recertification.
  2. The Nationally Registered EMT-Basic who needs to re-register with the National Registry and transition to the new National Registry EMT.
  3. The EMT-B who has successfully completed at least 16 of the 24 Core CEUs required for recertification.
The two (2) sections are:
  1. EMT Transition Refresher Class D - 8 CEU EMT Refresher
  2. *EMT Transition Refresher Class E - 16 CEU EMT Refresher Review* - NOTE: THIS CLASS IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT!
