| Additional Information: | This course reviews basic respiratory anatomy and physiology and focuses on the assessment and management of patients with respiratory distress or failure at the EMT level. Students will learn to recognize normal and abnormal breathing patterns using the primary survey and vital signs, and to identify common causes of dyspnea. The course covers EMT-relevant respiratory emergencies including upper and lower airway conditions, asthma, COPD, congestive heart failure with pulmonary edema, anaphylaxis, pneumothorax, pulmonary embolism, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Emphasis is placed on basic airway management, oxygen therapy, use of bronchodilators and epinephrine per protocol, CPAP, patient positioning, and timely transport decisions in accordance with NJ EMS standards. |
